On Sunday the 28th of April, the inaugural Flamenco Festival and Gala Performance went off with a bang, or rather a stomp, at Claremont Showground’s Gate One Theatre.
Showcasing the full breadth of the WA flamenco scene, the Festival offered free family-friendly activities, including Flamenco dance, singing, and rhythm demonstrations and classes. The smell of traditional paella filled the air, while visitors browsed the Flamenco costume and accessory stalls, stopped by the dress-up photobooth, gazed over the art exhibition by talented local artist Geraldine Gustavino, and enjoyed a vino or two at the Gate One Theatre Bar.

An exciting gala performance followed the day time festival, with international guest artist, Inmaculada Ortega direct from Jerez de la Frontera, the heart of flamenco in Spain, dancing alongside some of Perth’s best Flamenco dancers, as well as students from studios all over the city.
There’s no doubt the Festival’s aim was realised; to grow and strengthen a Spanish arts community by sharing the vibrancy and diversity of flamenco and Spanish culture and arts.
